Folio SCAD (Print Magazine)

Design Goal

The goal of this project was to art direct and design a new general consumer/ specialty [professional] magazine of our own choice.  Something that would interest us and is not existing in the market. As a student studying at SCAD, I found an opportunity to create a magazine for SCAD students that was unique and did not exist.

Design Solution

I looked at several magazines that existed in the market at first. At first, I focused my research to art and design magazines such as Print, How, Azure, Communication Arts, Art and Antiques, Surface, Art news and Art in America. Then, I started focusing on magazines that various art schools had such at CalArts, RISD, and School of Visual Arts. I also conducted market research and asked several questions, such as “what would the students at SCAD like to see in a magazine?” I also surveyed and found out if a SCAD magazine would meet the market’s needs. I gained many beneficial insights from the students.

Design Concept

Since the magazine’s main target audience is the SCAD students, I tried to make the magazine look fun and dynamic so it would appeal to students studying at SCAD.  The name of the magazine is FOLIO, which is taken from the name portfolio. I chose this name because a portfolio is an essential part of every art student’s career. Students from different departments could get to see things happening in other departments, and get to see each others’ work. The magazine would be out quarterly and would focus on important events happening at SCAD, as well as student work.
