JCPenney Mobile Application

Design Goal

In this project I studied different mobile applications at first. Then, we were asked to pick a mobile application that we thought was lacking in usability.  The application I chose is JCPenney’s mobile application. At first, we had to analyze the application through heuristic evaluation. Next, we conducted user tests and gained insights from the users through observation, interviews and questionnaires. Each alteration was intended to simplify the users’ shopping experience.

Design Research

The Goal of this project is to understand where users are having major trouble with navigating the mobile application. The initial research started with mind mapping about JC Penney and researching about the company’s history. Since there were stores nearby, I conducted primary research in the store, where I gained insights through observations. In the beginning, we started with the heuristic evaluation of the application. Then usability testing followed, and once we gained insights from the users I prepared my own set of questions and a paper prototype of how the application would look. Afterward, I started my first round of testing. Once I gained insights, I made changes and started the second round of testing. After the low fidelity testing, I started with high fidelity user testing to gain feedback about the look and feel of the application.

Design Outcomes

This project was all about research and conducting at least two sets of user testing.  All the decisions, from the look and feel of the application, to the icons and the navigation used in the application were tested. I worked on three major tasks to enhance this mobile application. The first task was to make the shopping cycle more accessible. The second tasks was to improve the navigation to the orders because most of the users could not go back to their orders and would get lost in the loop. The third task was to help the shoppers get the coupons and use it more efficiently.
